Amino acid supplement helps heart failure patient recovery

Endurance in physical fitness can be made easier for recovering heart failure patients by supplementing their diets with the amino acid L-arginine. Heart failure occurs when the heart becomes enlarged and cannot efficiently pump blood, leading to fluid accumulation in the lungs and limbs, and difficulty breathing. L-arginine, a forerunner of nitric oxide, helps blood flow at rest and during exercise. Combined with other recovery therapies, long-term L-arginine supplementation helps increase endurance stamina during exercise. In the study, heart failure recovery patients taking the supplement maintained a steady heart rate that enabled them to extend their workout time. The combination of exercise and L-arginine supplement helped correct abnormal blood vessel functioning, according to researchers.
