Bo Diddley stable after heart attack

Famed bluesman Bo Diddley (78) is in a Gainesville, FL, hospital following a heart attack. Diddley is famous for ever-cool tunes such as "Who Do You Love" and "I'm a Man." Well, at least he was in the right location: Diddley was actually at the hospital for a checkup when the heart attack struck. This ensured he got prompt care that may very well have saved his life.

It appears Diddley suffered the heart attack on Friday of last week, but it was only announced today. This afternoon a spokeswoman stated that the now-elderly guitar hero felt unwell during his Friday checkup and was transferred to the emergency room, which is where the heart attack occurred. Diddley had surgery soon after to have a stent fitted. This will improve blood flow to the heart. Today he was transferred out of intensive care. As of earlier today his condition was said to be stable but serious.

Interesting factoids: Diddley's real name is Ellas Bates. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. The legendary musician has not been enjoying the best of health lately: he had a stroke in May of this year, which has impaired his speech and speech recognition. He has also lost some of his toes to complications of diabetes.

Stress-reducing tips from Celebs

An important step in having a healthy heart is reducing your stress. Yeah, it's not as easy as it sounds, especially when we're working long hours and trying to fulfill family and personal obligations. If you're struggling to find ways to de-stress, here are some suggestions from celebrities:
  • Joely Fisher cranks up her music and dances around her living room
  • Kathy Griffin indulges in cheesy reality TV
  • Nancy Travis gets a massage
  • Daisy Fuentes relies on her significant other to calm her down
  • Sharon Osbourne eats chocolate -- the dark kind

Cheney had heart surgery this weekend

According to The White House this past weekend Vice President Dick Cheney had minor heart surgery to replace an implanted cardiac device intended to "monitor and correct his heart rhythm" (it's a an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator). The procedure was performed at George Washington University and was without complication, and apparently Cheney was back to his normal schedule later that same day. Cheney has suffered 4 heart attacks (whoa), the first way back when he was only 37, and at the young age of 66 has already had 2 angioplasties and a quadruple heart bypass surgery.

Lead singer of KISS cancels concerts because of heart problems

The frontman of rock band KISS had to cancel a southern California concert last Friday (July 27th) because of heart troubles. According to music magazine NME, Paul Stanley's heart started racing during sound check and paramedics were called in to help regulate his heart beat.

While his heart problems don't appear to be life threatening at the moment, Cardiologists at Cedars Sinai recommended that Stanley cancel the concert to avoid damaging his heart further. Fans weren't left out in the cold though -- the remaining three members of the band took to the stage in his absence, marking the first time the band has played as a trio.

Kim Jong Il: Heart problems?

The health of possibly the world's most controversial leaders is in the spotlight once again this week, as Kim Jong Il, the head of state in communist North Korea, made a public appearance looking more gaunt than usual. Catching a glimpse of the leader is rare -- he's a known recluse -- and it would be even more unusual for the 65-year-old to admit to any health troubles, though it's rumoured he underwent heart surgery in Germany in May. Nobody's confirming anything -- discussing health is apparently considered taboo in North Korea -- but spies from South Korea have claimed that the leader has long suffered from Diabetes and heart disease.

Though Kim is highly exalted in his own country, the rest of the world has been on pins and needles wondering just how dangerous Kim's regime is and what North Korea's next move will be. Time will tell if the leader is as strong in body as he is in leadership qualities.

Courtney Love forced to give up smoking

A few little bumps in the throat may have saved Courtney Love's health. Jonathon at That's Fit recently reported that the singer was recently forced to quit smoking by her doctor, who found benign nodules in her throat, caused by her daily cigarette habit. Though the nodules are benign, they could require surgery if Love doesn't stop smoking. I can only imagine that throat surgery would have a big impact on someone who sings for a living.

Not only will Love hopefully enjoy a long music career now that she's given up cigarettes, she'll also quickly improve her cardiovascular health. And research shows that parents who quit smoking are less likely to pass the the bad habit on to their kids, so she's doing her daughter a favor as well.

Regis Philbin to undergo bypass surgery

TV celebrity Regis Philbin announced today that he will be undergoing bypass surgery later this week. The long-time host of the popular talk show "Live with Regis and Kelly" (which formerly featured Kathy Lee as co-host), stated that he has been suffering pains in his chest for quite some time and, at the behest of his doctors, has elected to go forward with the bypass.

Philbin explained in his very comedic, Regis way that he would have preferred to have done angioplasty (they way he put it "You know you get in, bang-bang-bang, they blow you open and you leave the next day"), it appears as though he has plaque in his arteries, which therefore make the bypass surgery necessary.

The recovery period for triple-bypass surgery is seldom quick, so it remains unknown how long Regis will be absent from his popular TV program.

Denver Bronco running back Damien Nash dies of heart attack

Damien Nash, a Denver Broncos running back, was hosting a basketball game yesterday to benefit the Darris Nash Find a Heart Foundation, a charity that raises funds for heart transplant research. Darris Nash, the brother of Damien had to have a transplant. Darris had a weakened heart muscle condition known as dilated cardiomyopathy. The ailment can be caused by a viral infection, inflammation or other causes.

Damien Nash collapsed after returning home to his wife, and was pronounced dead at the hospital at 6:41 p.m. central standard time. The family of course is in shock since he had no history of heart problems. Damien is survived by his wife Judy and a 7 month old daughter. Nash was 24. Nash was a graduate of Coffeyville Community College in Kansas and University of Missouri before getting drafted by the Tennessee Titans in 2005. Denver signed him as a free agent in 2006. He played a total of 6 NFL games.

Olympic gold medalist retires due to heart problems

In what is already shaking up the Olympic world, Chinese swimmer Luo Xeujuan has retired as a result of discovering that she has a potentially fatal heart problem.

A hopeful for the Chinese in the 2008 Olympics, Luo had previously won the 100m breaststroke gold medal in Athens in 2004 and also took home four golds at the 2001 and 2003 World Championships. According to Lou's coach, Zhang Yadong, China's chances of winning a gold at the 2008 Olympics are diminished greatly as a result of Lou's forced retirement.

Evidently, problems started for Luo back in July when she missed two months of training due to "physical problems" and "mental stress." A successful return months later at the Asian Games trials was cut short after fainting during a training session in November. Doctors diagnosed her as either suffering from exhaustion or low blood pressure (it was never reported which of the two it was, though her retirement announcement seems to point to the latter). She was subsequently taken off the roster for the World Championships in March.

Luo was very saddened by these turn of events and publicly stated "I am very competitive, but I have no other choice than to quit."

Anti-smoking ads on DVDs discourage teen use

In renewed efforts to curb teen smoking, Hollywood veterans Bob and Harvey Weinstein plan to include anti-smoking ads on all DVDs of films that include images of people smoking. One of the greatest -- and most preventable -- risk factors for heart disease, smoking appears in 75 percent of youth-rated films and 90 percent of R-rated films. Thirty-eight percent of all teen smoking can be traced back to the influence of these depictions.

"These messages will fight false film images of healthy and hip smokers with the real hard truth of addiction and disease," announced Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal regarding the agreement. One year ago, 32 state attorney generals petitioned Hollywood's major movie studios to include anti-smoking ads on home entertainment products. Last month, free anti-smoking ads poured into Weinstein's offices from 41 U.S. states, Puerto Rico and two U.S. territories.

Former U.S. president, Gerald Ford's heart

Former President Gerald Ford, 93, was released from hospital after four days of undeclared medical testing. His son, Steven Ford, called his father's heart issues normal for a man his age -- he is the oldest living former U.S. president.

This was the fourth time Ford has been admitted to the hospital this year. Over the summer he had a pacemaker put in, and was admitted once for shortness of breath. In August, Ford received angioplasty surgery to increase blood flow through two of his coronary arteries at Minnesota's Mayo Clinic -- over half-way across the country from his home in Rancho Mirage, California.

Director David Lynch promotes inner peace

David Lynch, the surrealist American director of such works as Twin Peaks and Dune, has been practicing Transcendental Meditation (TM) for 30 years -- claiming the practice has helped rid him of anger and boosted his creativity. Letting go of anger has been documented as reducing the risk of heart disease later in life.

Perhaps healthy Mr. Lynch is onto something. He is so dedicated to the practice that he set up the David Lynch Foundation for Consciousness-Based Education and World Peace, which provides funding to teachers to promote TM in schools. Lynch, like many other TM-ers, believes that a daily practice will help promote world peace by finding it within first. Simple and effortless, it only takes 20 minutes -- and the benefits seem endless.

Previous research has shown the benefits of TM for heart patients and healthy individuals alike. TM reduces blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and relieves stress -- which prolonged exposure to can cause adverse effects on the central nervous system and heart. TM is also recommended as a helpful aid in the cessation of smoking, heavy drinking and other unhealthy habits.

Californias landmark clean air bill

Last Wednesday, California Gov. Schwarzenegger signed the first bill to provide comprehensive regulation and market promotion to reduce the states greenhouse gas emissions. Many studies have linked a rise in heart attacks with high smog days and consistent air pollution exposure.

California is the 12th highest carbon emitter in the world -- and now, number one in combating global warming. Beneficial for both the environment and businesses alike, bill AB 32 plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent -- back to the 1990 levels by the year 2020. For details on Californias master plan, read the recent press release from the office of the governor.

Armani wants only healthy beautiful women. So there.

At this years London Fashion Week, world famous designer Giorgio Armani spoke out against the fashion industrys obsession with anorexic looking models. A designer of high art and integrity, Armani stated he never wanted to use unhealthy looking women to show off his works -- instead blaming the interfering of stylists and the media in their demand for ultra-thin models.

The remarks were made in response to an earlier ban at Madrids fashion week, keeping women with extremely low body mass index measurements -- and potential eating disorders -- off the red carpets and away from the cameras -- as a way of protecting the minds of young women, and their future heart health.

Armani made these comments at the years most highly anticipated, star-studded fashion benefit for (PRODUCT) RED -- spawned by U2s Bono to raise money to fight AIDS in Africa.

Dreamgirls Beyonce Knowles: maple syrup weight loss diet

For her role as Dina in Dreamgirls, Beyonce Knowles adopted a maple syrup diet, based on the Madal Bal Natural Tree Syrup detox plan, and reported she lost 20 pounds in two weeks as a result, according to a recent interview with the British Daily Express.

In the meantime, Beyonce has gained back the weight she deliberately lost to play the role of Dina in Dreamgirls, saying she likes her curves and warns other women not to follow in her footsteps when it comes to losing weight in such a drastic manner.

Madal Bal Natural Tree Syrup is mixed with water, lemon juice and cayenne pepper and drank in place of food at each meal for up to two weeks. Cayenne pepper is known to speed up metabolism. According to the Madal Bal Natural Tree Syrup website, Madal Bal Natural Tree Syrup combines pure Canadian grade-C maple syrup and various Southeast Asian palm syrups. The product claims include that Madal Bal Natural Tree Syrup is rich in essential minerals.

However, nutritionists suggest that what is missing may be more of a concern. The all liquid fasting program based on maple syrup, lemons, and cayenne pepper offers no fats, proteins, and the only carbohydrate is sugar. With celebrity endorsement, even by way of casual comment in an interview, and the interest in finding the latest and greatest weight loss program, health food stores in Britain are reporting higher than normal sales of Madal Bal Natural Tree Syrup.

To learn more about the detox program, visit the Madal Bal Natural Tree Syrup website. But like my son just asked, as he is reading about using a maple syrup, lemon juice and cayenne pepper liquid diet for weight loss, "Great -- but what happens when you start eating again?" Exactly.
